âLet me out of here, you stupid cow! You can't keep me here! Iâm gonna kill you! I'm going to kill all of you!â
Lisbeth slowly drank from the cool flask of water that had been handed to her as she listened to Victor scream his head off. She couldn't see him, as he was down the hall, but she heard it as Watchman Davis slid his cell door into place then walked the length of what seemed to be a resting area for the guards where she and Valeria were sitting.
âAnd youâre sure no one will find him here?â her mother asked, her keen gaze down the hall past the officer as she approached.
âUntil they do the monthly hygiene checks, yeah. He'll get daily rations and the like, but this is solitary, so he won't have any direct human interaction until then. Not a single set of eyes will lay on him.â
âHygiene checks?â Lisbeth asked.
âYes. It's where inmates in solitary are allowed a hot shower and a barber to shave them, if they so wish. They're then checked for any sort of parasites or mites while their cells are completely cleaned out. Good behavior during hygiene checks means getting out of solitary ahead of time. But this level of the prison is for the worst of the worst, so they won't listen to his cries and won't feel pity for him or believe that he's not supposed to be here. There's even a chance that they won't let him go after the first hygiene check, and it'll actually take a couple. But even if it's just one, that should be enough for Vanka to be already out the door or almost ready to launch her armada.â
Lisbeth breathed out a sigh of relief. Maybe she should feel guilty about trapping Victor in such an awful place, but compared to the alternative, it was basically an ideal situation. Maybe a little time in some of the worst prison cells Kyerchov had to offer would help temper his vehemence.
Or maybe it would make him worse. Lisbeth didn't really care on that end, because she wasn't ever planning on returning to the city under the earth ever again. Although it had once been her home, her haven, it was no longer that and never would be. She wanted to free it from Vanka, wanted to help the impoverished that kept being taken advantage of there, but it wasnât home.
And while it was true there was a possibility that Epoch Sol wasn't either, that was a matter for another day.
âSo, what's next?â Valeria asked, seemingly just as satisfied as Lisbeth. âThe little ones told you the camp where Katyana is being held, yes?â
âThey did,â Lisbeth answered.
âThen letâs get some quick rations into us and get down there. Iâm sure another fire will allow us to get wherever we need to in order to get us out. And unlike Victor, Katyana will no doubt be eager to help us.â
Watchman Davis cleared her throat. âAs much as
